- High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
- Educational Aide Permit or teaching license
- Successful completion of BCI/FBI background checks
- Meet NCLB requirements for paraprofessional status
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The primary purpose of the 21st Century Substitute Youth Leader is to assist after school students with homework and enrichment clubs in a fun, safe learning environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The below list is not ranked in order of importance.)
- Ensure safety of students, taking all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- Help students learn and accomplish their educational, social and emotional goals
- Prepare snacks and supervise students during snack time
- Be responsible for maintaining snack records including food count per child and submit records to Site Coordinator
- Accompany students to activities outside the classroom; including but not limited to snack time, bathroom, gymnasium and playground
- Assist Site Coordinator with administering the Search Institute Profiles of Student Life Attitudes and Behaviors survey quarterly
- Assist students with all academic and social/emotional needs
- Use basic first aid/training when necessary
- Assist Site Coordinator with special projects, as assigned
- Supervise/monitor students at all times
- Distribute, collect and sign student homework contracts
- Work cooperatively with tutors and Site Coordinators to meet the needs of students
- Attend meetings and in-services as required, including but not limited to orientations and all applicable School Age Child Care (SACC) trainings
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
- Be responsible for monitoring and updating personal SACC file and for providing the necessary documents for ESC file
- Follow appropriate procedures for daily student pick-up
- Support reasonable rules and procedures of classroom behavior; i.e. student incentive program
- Support gas voucher and fee programs at the site
- Maintain respect at all times for all confidential information, i.e. student records, testing scores, etc.
- Follow appropriate procedures as outlined in the before/after school program handbook
- Effectively monitor individual student behavior/ enforce reasonable rules and procedures in a fair manner to maintain a safe learning environment including but not limited to a student incentive program
- Support all 21st Century Staff in effectively executing the requirements of the 21st Century Grant
- Assist Site Coordinator in collecting and tracking student attendance and SACC records (including discipline and injury logs)
- Keep in communication with Site Coordinator to communicate program concerns/needs
- Effectively manage the homework help area providing students with needed supplies and guidance
- Assist in the implementation and administration of enrichment clubs
- Perform other duties as assigned
- The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment at the Center.
- Serve as a role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings
- Help instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Typical school technology as well as assistive technology (e.g., communication devices, etc.)
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Dates of the work period will be stated in the employment contract
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
The 21st Century Program Substitute Youth Leader will be evaluated by the Site Coordinator or his or her designee in accordance with the procedures identified by law and including the standards established by the organization. The employee will be given a copy of the evaluation instrument and standards in advance and he or she will be expected to conduct a self-evaluation and establish a minimum of one goal annually to advance knowledge, skill and/or ability in a job related area.
